Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International School of Textiles and Management (SVPISTM) celebrated National Handloom Day on August 7, highlighting the rich heritage of India's handloom industry. The event was presided over by Dr. P Alli Rani, the director of SVPISTM, who emphasised the value of handloom products. She highlighted how these products, derived from sustainable resources, are beneficial for both the environment and the Indian economy.
The celebration featured several distinguished guests, including Chief Guest K Gunasekaran, a National Awardee for Ahimsa Silk; Rathinavel, General Manager of the National Handloom Development Corporation (NHDC); MV Gopinath, a passionate handloom entrepreneur; and Sivaguru, a handloom weaver and entrepreneur.
In his address, K Gunasekaran called for urgent measures to support handloom weavers, who are facing significant challenges in the textile industry. He urged consumers to choose handloom garments, which would, in turn, help revive the fortunes of the weavers. MV Gopinath presented his research on handloom weaving, particularly the potential of fusing Pashmina wool and silk to appeal to the European luxury market, a move that could significantly improve the livelihoods of Indian weavers. Gopinath also shared his successful project on the revival of Czech Kroj, supported by Indian handloom.
Students from Harvee School, Kuniamuthur, participated enthusiastically in the celebration. A key highlight of the event was a fashion show organised by SVPISTM students, showcasing an array of exquisite handloom garments. The show not only demonstrated the beauty of handloom textiles but also highlighted the creativity and innovation of the young designers at SVPISTM.
The event was a resounding success, with attendees appreciating the dedication and effort invested in organising the celebration. The vibrant display of handloom garments, coupled with informative sessions on the significance of the handloom industry, made the occasion both educational and entertaining.
