The Nilgiris Mountain Train, a UNESCO-listed service, operates between Mettupalayam and Ooty and attracts a large number of tourists from Tamil Nadu, neighbouring states like Kerala and Karnataka, and even from abroad. This scenic journey offers views of green valleys, gushing waterfalls, deep caves, and a pleasant environment.
This morning, the mountain train departed from Mettupalayam railway station heading to Ooty with 184 passengers on board. However, heavy rains in the Nilgiri district caused a landslide between the Adderley and Hillgrove railway stations. The landslide led to fallen trees and damage to the tracks.
As a result, the train had to return to Mettupalayam from Kallar railway station. The railway administration announced the cancellation of the mountain train service for the day and assured a full refund of the fare to all passengers who had booked tickets.
Tourists who had looked forward to the scenic journey were disappointed by the cancellation.
