Children's constant use of cell phones and computers can cause myophia problem, said V Panneerselvam, head of Arasan Eye Hospital. An eye donation awareness rally was held in Erode under the auspices of the Hospital and Idayam Narpani Iyakkam. Minister Muthuswamy inaugurated the rally.
Panneerselvam said:Parents should avoid giving cell phones, and computers to small children. The use of cell phones for education is essential for students today. However, they should close their eyes 20 seconds once in every 20 minutes. This gives some rest to the eyes. Constantly looking at the computer and cell phone can affect the brain development of young children and humidity in the eyes will decrease.
Diabetes can lead to vision loss if not controlled. Pressure in the eyes can also affect eyesight. Periodic medical treatment should be done. Erode Arasan Eye Bank was started in 2001. So far 15,000 eyes have been collected and 1200 eye transplants surgery have been done. The rest were donated to various hospitals.
Seven to eight percent of people in India lost  their vision due to iris damage. (corneal blindness). But available eyes are only 2%. The cornea available is also not of good quality. So, if someone dies or becomes brain dead during an accident, relatives should come forward to donate eyes. Every month, two young doctors are trained at the hospital under the Central government scheme. Not only that but also doctors from Ghana, and Zimbabwe etc got training.
More than one lakh cataract surgeries have been performed in the hospital. The Central government provides Rs 2000 for that surgery. The program was presided over by Mahadevan, District President of Idayam Narpani Iyakkam.
