The Tamil Nadu government has been pushing for funding from the central government for the second phase of the Chennai Metro, which covers 116 km across three routes. Despite initial support for the first phase, the central government has delayed funds for the second phase. The Tamil Nadu government has criticized this inaction and proceeded with the project using its own funds. Chief Minister Stalin has personally appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and BJP leader Annamalai has also requested central support for the project. Construction is on-going despite the lack of central funding.
In this context that the Central Cabinet has approved the allocation of funds for the second phase of the Chennai Metro project worth Rs.63,246 crore. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Stalin thanked Prime Minister Modi for approving the funds.
We also requested that funds be allocated for this project and the prime minister's eyes should be on Tamil Nadu. The demand raised by the entire Tamil Nadu echoed like a slogan in Delhi; the request has been fulfilled finally.
