Every Diwali, pollution from firecrackers poses a significant health challenge, especially as air quality worsens, affecting people from children to the elderly. In recent years, air quality measurements in Chennai during Diwali and the days around it have shown dangerous levels of pollution.
Firecrackers release harmful substances like arsenic, mercury, cadmium, and other toxic chemicals into the air, worsening health risks. Environmental experts warn of the dangers of inhaling such pollutants. In 2022, Chennai ranked first among cities globally with the worst air quality, with pollution levels reaching over 700 in some areas, far exceeding the hazardous limit of 300.
That is why there is a strong call to reduce the number of firecrackers during Diwali celebrations. Bursting firecrackers has become a cultural tradition, but isn't it more important to prevent air pollution from increasing? Hence, the government has allotted specific times for bursting crackers on Diwali—2 hours in the morning and 2 hours in the evening.
Let’s celebrate Diwali with firecrackers but buy fewer than last year. We can avoid large firecrackers that cause more pollution and opt for eco-friendly crackers that produce less pollution. Let’s support Sivakasi and also strive to live a healthier life!
