India-China border peace depends on mutual trust

China's Foreign Ministry spokesman, Lin Jian, announced yesterday that the longstanding border disputes between India and China have been resolved through a series of negotiations. However, Indian Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi emphasized that Indian forces stationed along the Chinese border will only be withdrawn once the 2020 status quo is fully restored.
We know that China has repeatedly violated its agreements on the border issue. In particular it violated the agreement that there should be no concentration of troops on the border. Therefore, there is no doubt that relations will improve and good relations will flourish if both the countries follow the amicable solution that has been reached.
India's stance is clear: "We will not attack anyone, but if attacked, we will not back down." If China acknowledges and reciprocates this position, there will be no border conflict or tension. The time has come for such mutual understanding, and both nations appear aligned on this front. This is widely seen as a diplomatic victory for Prime Minister Modi's government.
As a result of this solution, there is also good news that Chinese President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi are going to officially meet at the BRICS summit today. The meeting will no doubt add strength to the settlement that has now been reached. Both countries should plan for whatever they need to do to create a secure environment at the border at all times because border peace will determine the status of India & China relationship.
