The Tamil Nadu government is deliberating a potential ban on online games from midnight to 5 AM in response to the rising concerns over addiction and financial stress caused by online gambling. The state has witnessed a troubling increase in suicides linked to online gaming losses, with over 30 reported cases so far.
In light of these incidents, the government is exploring measures to curb the negative impact of online gaming. One proposal under consideration is limiting the time people, especially children, can engage in online gaming, restricting it to four hours per day. To enforce these restrictions and ensure better monitoring, the state is also contemplating the introduction of a mandatory document verification process, possibly using Aadhaar, to play online games.
The discussions include setting an upper cap on the deposit amounts allowed for online games, which would further reduce the financial risks associated with gambling. These steps aim to tackle online gaming addiction, particularly among young people, and create a safer environment for users in Tamil Nadu.
