Tamil Nadu’s Minister of Public Works, Highways and Minor Ports, EV Velu, felicitated the winners of the Tiruvannamalai district-level competitions for the Chief Minister's Cup on September 27.
The event, held at the District Sports Hall, saw the minister presenting medals and certificates of appreciation to the top performers.
District Collector D Bhaskara Pandian, and assembly members MP Giri (Chengam), PST Saravanan (Kalasappakkam), and O Jyoti (Seyyar) were also present.
In his speech, Minister EV Velu praised the importance of sports in maintaining physical and mental well-being and reflected on his own experiences in sports. He highlighted various sports initiatives introduced under the Dravidian regime, such as the creation of the Tamil Nadu Sports Development Authority and policies encouraging the development of sports infrastructure, including a modern swimming pool in Tiruvannamalai. Velu emphasised the government's commitment to sports, particularly through international tournaments hosted in Tamil Nadu, such as the 44th BIDE Chess Olympiad and Chennai Squash World Cup.
A total of 32,679 participants competed in various sports across five categories from September 10 to 24, with 2,382 individuals winning top three positions at the district level.  The minister awarded certificates and medals to school and college students, differently abled individuals, and government employees who excelled in these competitions.
District Panchayat Committee President Parvathy Srinivasan, Tiruvannamalai Union Committee President Kalaivani Kalaimani, Tiruvannamalai Municipal Corporation Deputy Mayor Rajangam, and other officials attended the ceremony.
