Meteorological department issues orange alert for Chennai and neighbouring districts

The Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for Chennai and nearby districts, warning of heavy rainfall today. This alert applies to Chennai, Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur, and Kanchipuram districts, driven by a low-pressure system over the southwestern Bay of Bengal that has now intensified.
According to the department, the low-pressure area is moving toward the northern districts of Tamil Nadu and the southern coastal areas of Andhra Pradesh and is expected to progress further within the next 24 hours.
Light rain has been reported in the morning, but the intensity is expected to increase, with heavy rains likely after 10 AM, peaking in the evening. The weather department has also predicted similar heavy rainfall for these regions tomorrow.
