Padma Shri awardee, organic farmer Pappammal alias Rangammal died due to ill health at the age of 109.
After the death of her parents Marudachalam-Velammal of Devanapuram near Mettupalayam, who later moved to Thekambatti. Their daughter Pappammal (A) Rangammal (109) in 1916, along with her husband Rangammal was farming organically in their 10 acres of agricultural land. Later, in 1959, she became a ward member of Thekambatti panchayat, in 1964 she was a panchayat union councilor of Karamadai and later, she led Mathar Sangam. 
Also, for the last 45 years, she has worked with the Farmers Discussion Group of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University. Her husband passed away 20 years ago. However, she did not give up his efforts and farmed organically for more than 90 years. Appreciating her service, the Centre honoured her with "Padma Shri" award in 2021. Since her childhood, she had immense attachment with DMK leader Karunanidhi.
She took part in various protests held on behalf of DMK. And for the past few months she was receiving treatment at home due to ill health. 
She received Periyar Award in the Mupperum Vizha of DMK on September 17.  Various political party leaders including CM MK Stalin and organizations have expressed their deep condolences on the death of her.
