Dr. Shantanu Bhowmik, Professor of Aerospace Engineering at Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, has developed an innovative lightweight hybrid composite material designed to revolutionise defence technology.
This material is bulletproof, blast-proof, and fireproof, meeting NATO’s stringent STANAG Levels 3 and 4 standards. Remarkably, it is three times lighter than steel while offering superior protection. Successfully tested in extreme terrains such as the Siachen Glacier, the hybrid composite is poised to enhance the safety of defence vehicles, bunkers, and special operation boats. It can withstand sniper fire, up to 10 kg of TNT blasts, and extreme environmental conditions. Extensive testing was conducted in collaboration with Carborundum Universal Ltd, Bharat Forge Ltd, and Gharda Chemicals Ltd.
Aligned with the Make in India initiative, this innovation could save the country Rs. 20,000 crore annually by reducing dependency on imported defence materials. Endorsed by Chief of Defence Staff Gen. Anil Chauhan, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, and Lt. Gen. Subrata Saha (Retd.), the project highlights India's advancements in indigenous defence capabilities.
Dr. Bhowmik has named the composites after Indian heroes, including Netaji Subhas Armour (bulletproof) and Rani Lakshmi Bai Armour (fireproof), celebrating India's heritage.
“This revolutionary composite highlights India’s growing expertise in homegrown defence technologies,” said Dr. Bhowmik, emphasising Amrita University’s commitment to impactful research.
