The District Collector of Salem, R. Brindha Devi, announced that strict measures will be taken against unauthorized constructions in Yercaud. This statement was made during a mass contact camp held in Valavanthi village in the Yercaud Panchayat Union on Wednesday.
The camp, aimed at addressing the concerns of residents, witnessed the distribution of government welfare schemes worth Rs. 21.48 lakh to 153 beneficiaries.
Valavanthi village, with a population of 3,045 across 1,056 households, hosted the camp, which also involved the district officials addressing local issues. One of the pressing matters discussed was the improper disposal of waste near tourist areas, such as the dumping of garbage near the Yercaud Lake and roadways. The Collector instructed the authorities to relocate these waste sites and ensure proper segregation and disposal to avoid inconveniences to tourists and locals.
During the camp, the Collector  inspected the development of road construction projects and assured that long-pending requests for roads via Belur-Kondayanur would be fulfilled. Additionally, the lake in Yercaud, which has been overrun with green algae and lotus blooms, will be cleaned following orders issued to concerned officials.
The Collector emphasized the importance of maintaining Yercaud’s natural beauty while ensuring infrastructure development, including the enhancement of fire safety services, road facilities, and public amenities like drinking water and restrooms. She also announced that transportation facilities to the Thalaisolai area have been improved, responding to public demands.
The event saw over 180 petitions filed for various services, including land titles, caste certificates, and old-age pensions. These petitions have been forwarded to the respective departments for further action.
In her address, Collector Brindha Devi urged the hill residents to make full use of the welfare schemes provided by the Tamil Nadu government to improve their living conditions. She also stressed the importance of education and healthcare, announcing that medical camps would continue to be held regularly. Special attention is being given to women's safety, with hostel facilities provided for female students.
Prominent attendees at the event included Yercaud MLA K. Chitra, Salem Revenue Divisional Officer A. Abhinaya, and other senior government officials.
