Coimbatore Collector Kranthi Kumar Pati inaugurated the sapling planting session under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGA) in the Thondamuthur region. This initiative, which took place across 10 panchayats, saw the planting of saplings to promote environmental sustainability.
The event included participation from Additional Collector (Development) Swetha Suman, Thennamanallur Panchayat Council President Aurusamy, and District Development Officers.
The Director of Rural Development in Chennai has allocated a total of 1,27,420 tree saplings to Coimbatore district for the MGNREGA scheme. For the financial year 2024-25, administrative approval has been granted for planting 39,477 saplings in public spaces, along roadsides, and on riverbanks. The planting work has already commenced, with 5,382 saplings planted during World Environment Week.
Furthermore, the District Collector has instructed the production of 1,75,560 seedlings across 24 nurseries in Coimbatore district. Currently, 1,64,330 saplings are being nurtured in nurseries within 228 panchayats in the district.
