Kerala’s cry for help: Will PM’s visit lead to national disaster declaration?

A landslide in Kerala's Wayanad region resulted in thousands losing their homes and property, with 413 killed and 130 missing. Rescue efforts have been ongoing for 10 days. Opposition parties demanded Prime Minister Modi's personal visit and declaration of the landslide as a national calamity. Modi visited affected areas from a helicopter.
The Kerala government has demanded a financial assistance of Rs 2 thousand crore in the first phase for the rehabilitation works in the landslide affected areas. At the same time, the Kerala government is pressing for the Central Government to declare the landslide, which claimed a large number of human lives, as a national disaster in order to attract the attention of the world.
