The mid-day meal scheme introduced in Tamil Nadu is now being implemented in many states of India and is receiving a lot of attention being adopted abroad.
A nutrition program has been introduced in Indonesia, one of the countries with the highest number of malnourished children in the world. Arrangements have been made to provide midday meals to 8.3 crore children in all government schools in the country.
This has brought the attention of the world towards Tamil Nadu which pioneered noon meal to school children. For the first time in independent India late Kamaraj when he was the Chief Minister introduced the noon meal scheme. Later, it was transformed into a nutritious meal scheme and expanded. This scheme, developed by the late Chief Ministers Kalaignar Karunanidhi, MGR and Jayalalithaa, is still functioning well. Currently, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin is setting an example for the health and educational development of children in the state by introducing the breakfast meal scheme.
The fact that the nutritional scheme has crossed the border and has been implemented in Indonesia is a matter of pride for Tamil Nadu as the scheme takes global dimensions.
