Spain has decided to mandate warning labels on all smartphones sold in the country, aiming to raise awareness about mobile phone addiction and reduce screen time.
This decision was recommended in a 250-page report by a government-appointed expert panel, which also emphasized regulating children’s use of digital devices.
Recently, Australia approved a bill restricting social media usage for children under 16, reflecting a growing global concern about the impact of digital addiction. Similar to anti-smoking campaigns that use graphic warnings on tobacco products, Spain’s smartphone initiative seeks to instill caution among users.
The Spanish government's decision is praiseworthy and serves as a reminder for India to consider similar measures.
Central and state governments should promptly evaluate the benefits of such initiatives and take steps to implement them to safeguard the well-being of future generations.
