On August 17 (tomorrow), Chief Minister M. K. Stalin is going to inaugurate this scheme for public use. The Avinasi & Athikadavu projects have been successfully completed during the AIADMK government led by late Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, Edappadi K Palaniswami and now by the DMK government led by Chief Minister M.K.Stalin.
The project was started with an objective to fill 1,045 ponds in 3 districts of Coimbatore, Tirupur and Erode, thereby raising the ground water level and meeting the needs of agriculture and drinking water. Late Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, allocated Rs.3.27 crore as the initial phase fund for the research work. The project saw several subsequent revisions and when DMK came to power in 2021, Athikadavu & Avinasi projects continued. Due to some delay in land acquisition, the launch of the project kept getting delayed. However after completion of works, there was not enough water. Minister S.Muthusamy reportedly told that the surplus water after opening the Lower Bhavani cannal for irrigation. After a long delay, Athikadavu & Avinasi project is going to be launched.
The success of 60 years of struggle and demand has made the people and especially the farmers happy. They are remembering the Chief Ministers of the current & previous Tamil Nadu governments who have taken forward the Athikadavu & Avinasi project and are thanking them.
Tomorrow (August 17) is a golden day for the launch of this ambitious project that will raise the water table in three districts, alleviate drought and end drinking water scarcity.
