"Police Akka" initiative launched at Salem women's college

An awareness program for the "Police Akka" initiative was held on Monday at Sri Shakti Kailash Women’s College, led by Dr. R. Brinda Ddevi, a District Collector nnd attended by Pravinkumar Abhinabu, Salem City Police Commissioner. The initiative aims to enhance the safety and security of female students in educational institutions across the district.
Dr. Brinda Devi emphasized that under this initiative, a woman police officer will be assigned to each police station to establish a connection with nearby educational institutions.  This strategy is designed to ensure the safety of female students while also bridging the gap between them and the police.
To improve enrolment rates among women in higher education in Salem district, multiple measures are being taken to address safety concerns in collaboration with law enforcement. 
The "Police Akka" initiative will allow female students to directly contact their designated police officer in case of issues such as cyber crimes or harassment, ensuring prompt assistance.
The initiative aims to alleviate parental concerns, encouraging them to send their daughters to college without fear. Dr. Brinda Devi stated, “The ‘Police Akka’ program ensures the safety of our children through various government measures.”
Mr. Praveen Kumar Abhinabu reiterated the program’s purpose, stating that it provides a platform for female students to address their concerns without hesitation. Under this initiative, female officers will visit colleges at least twice a month to provide guidance and awareness.
All colleges will feature awareness posters with QR codes related to the "Police Akka" program. Scanning these codes will provide students with the contact information of their assigned police officer, ensuring confidentiality when reporting issues.
Training sessions covering law, mental health, medicine, and social welfare have been conducted for all police officers involved in the program. The initiative will also address concerns related to cyber crimes and suspicious phone calls regarding loans. The program encourages female students to effectively utilize the "Police Akka" initiative for their safety. The event saw participation from Deputy Commissioner Ms. S. Brindha, the college principal, relevant officials, police personnel, and college students.
