Incomplete promises: Central Govt. fails to fund Chennai Metro project

The 2021-2022 Central Government budget speech announced about the metro projects to be built in Chennai for a distance of 118.9 km at a cost of Rs.63,246crores. But apart from Chennai Phase II Metro and Nashik Metro, funds have been allocated for 3 other metro projects announced at the same time. The central government has not given money to the Tamil Nadu project for 3 years.
Chennai Metro covers a distance of 54.1 kilometers in its built and operational state. Aside from that, 118.9 km of metro is being built. The 170 kilometer Chennai Metro route will be operational upon completion of this work. In a recent interview, Union Minister NirmalaSitharaman stated that the development is being funded by the central government.
But only half of what he said is true. This means that the central government provided funds only for the 54.1 km metro that was built first. The truth is that the central government has not provided even a single rupee for the second phase of the metro.Phase 2 Metro in Chennai is going to be brought in 3 lines bringing up the Metro line a distance of 118.9 km. The works for this are going on.
It was at this stage that Chief Minister Stalin personally appealed to Prime Minister Modi in this regard. Even so, the central government has not allocated any fund.
The people of Tamilnadu have unitedly expressed their desire for the newly elected government at the centre, regardless of party affiliation, to take this into account and provide adequate funding for the Chennai Metro project's second phase.
