There a huge difference in caste and religion based reservations compared to the percentage of population of the respective groups of people in India. As a result, a sizable portion of the minority community still lacks access to government jobs and education.
The BJP is taking steps to further increase the existing reservationgap.Under the BJP, the Indian system of governance, categories of reservation are divided as Scheducled Caste (SC). Scheduled Tribe (ST), Other Backward Classes (OBC) Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) and General.
As per 2021 definition, educational level reservation for SC is 15%, ST is 7.5%, OBC - 27%, EWS - 10%, Persons with Disabilities - 4% and more than 36.5% reservation in general category in government jobs.
But according to the census, the people living under OBC are the majority. The upper castes constitute less than 20% of the population.
Thus, through reservation which is shared without proper calculation, the minority communities such as Muslims, Christians and others are not allocated seats according to their population. Due to this, many people are not getting education and government jobs are not available for a long time.
However, in the absence of authority to regulate reservation in government jobs, minority colleges are working to create educational opportunities for themselves only in educational institutions.
In this case, the Union BJP government has started to block those opportunities.
While India's population census has not been conducted by the Union government since 2011, according to private estimates, about 79% of the population is Hindu, 15% is Muslim, and the remaining 6% is Christian or Buddhist.
Amit Shah, claiming the 4% Muslim reservation was unconstitutional, announced its revocation last year while the BJP was in power in Karnataka.
Following this, the Union Government is pursuing a case in the Supreme Court to legally dilute the activities of many educational institutes for minorities, including the Aligarh Muslim University.
Apart from this, many people are condemning the actions of the Union Government which tends to ban the limited reservation for minorities in the education sector.
The 4%.Quota for Muslims who constitute 15 per cent of the population is already less. This being the case the government’s actions that seek to reduce it are harming the sovereignty of secular India. It is not good to sabotage minorities' chances of work and education!
