In December 2022, train services on the old Pamban bridge were halted due to increased vibrations. Subsequently, a new bridge was constructed at a cost of Rs. 550 crore. However, a recent inspection by the Railway Safety Commissioner revealed several issues in the new bridge, including violations of construction standards, corrosion, and lack of proper measures to address these problems, raising serious concerns.
Madurai Member of Parliament S. Venkatesan has sounded the alarm and expressed his anguish that ``negligence in the construction of the Pamban bridge is an act of disregard for the lives of thousands of people who travel on that route every day.'' If there is a violation in the construction of an important bridge that sustains the lives of thousands of people every day, there is no doubt that irregularities may have taken place in it.
Because it was Railway Safety Commissioner Choudhary who exposed the violation. Meanwhile, the Railway Board has ordered a five-member inquiry committee, including IIT professors, technical experts and retired senior railway officials, to probe the new Pamban bridge controversy. Indian Railway Board has built the Pamban bridge on the traditional pattern of ignoring the safety rules, making the safety of the people questionable.
Therefore, the only expectation of the people is that the trains should be operated only after ensuring 100 percent safety of the passengers who will travel through the new Pamban bridge and the Central Railway Minister should take appropriate steps and find a suitable solution!
