A group of youths visited a nearby petty shop in the evening to purchase cigarettes near a restaurant in Cheran Maanagar. An argument broke out between the youths and the shopkeeper over payment. Later that evening, around 9:30 pm, the same group returned to the petty shop and hurled a petrol bomb.

However, due to a mistake, the petrol bomb landed near the restaurant instead of the intended target, causing a minor explosion. This startled the people in the vicinity, who promptly alerted the police.

Upon investigation, the police apprehended Varadarajan, aged 25, who was found to be under the influence of alcohol. It was discovered that the dispute originated from the earlier argument over cigarette payment.

Although a minor fire broke out in the restaurant due to the explosion, it was quickly extinguished. Varadarajan has been taken into custody, and the police are currently interrogating him. Additionally, efforts are underway to locate and apprehend the two other youths who accompanied him during the incident.
