National Science Day is an annual event in India to celebrate the value of science in everyday life. It commemorates the discovery of the Raman Effect by Indian physicist Sir C. V. Raman on February 28, 1928. The department of Physics at SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Vadapalani Campus, organized the event in association with the Indian Science Congress Association's Chennai chapter.
The event provided a platform for students from various schools to showcase their inventions and innovations through working models and projects. Dr. K. Jagannathan, convener of National Science Day 2024, began the day with a welcome speech, followed by Dr. C. Gomathy, VP Academics& Placements, who emphasized the importance of Science Day and India's contribution to the advancement of science for indigenous or native people's needs. Dr. C.V. Jayakumar, Dean FET, urged students to engage in hands-on learning.
Dr. S. Ramchandran, Director of Academics, encouraged students to participate in research. Dr. P. Chitralekha, Chief Guest of Healthcare Technologies Division, Virginia Tech India Research and Education Forum, IIT, discussed the importance of developing a more inquisitive mindset towards problems that can provide solutions.
Events such as science quizzes, speech competitions, and science project displays were held on National Science Day. The Science Day Project competition received 100 projects from school and college students, which were displayed in the physics lab and ECE lab for demonstration. Nearly 300 participants from 15 schools in and around Chennai visited the exhibited projects and celebrated National Science Day.
