The Coop Department has decided to provide coop banking services through ration shops to general public by opening savings account in coop banks.
In this regard, the circular sent by the Registrar of Co-operative Societies, Subbaiyan, states:
Various types of loans such as crop, fertilizer ,animal husbandry, medium term agricultural loans are being provided to the farmer members of Primary Agricultural Cooperative Credit Societies through Central Cooperative Banks.
Welfare schemes of various sectors are also provided to the general public through fair price shops run by coop societies, including essential goods.
Through Co-operative Fair Price Shops, steps would be taken to open savings accounts in Central Co-operative Bank branches in the area for general public so that the savings and loan services of Co-op Banks reach the public.
To open savings, fixed deposit accounts and loan schemes of Central Co-operative Banks in all Fair Price Shops, the Fair Price Shop staff will distribute applications to the public and get the completed applications. The staff will be provided an incentive of Rs.5 per account.
ATMs and electronic transaction facilities provided by the bank to savings account holders will be provided to the public opening accounts through Fair Price Shops. It should be ensured that the package containing these facilities reaches them immediately after opening the account for them so that they can get the card facility and banking services easily.
The average age of persons who are agricultural members of cooperative societies is 50. Therefore, in order to attract more youth in cooperative societies, new banking schemes would be devised to enroll youth as members of cooperative societies.
The activities of cooperative banks should be such that banking services and government schemes should reach people of all walks of life. Therefore, public are requested to open savings account in Central Co-operative Banks through ration shops, he added.
