The India Meteorological Department has announced that the low-pressure area over the Southeast Bay of Bengal has intensified into a deep depression.
It is expected to strengthen further and move towards Puducherry, as well as the coastal areas of Northeast Tamil Nadu and South Andhra Pradesh in the next two days.
In light of heavy rains in Chennai, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin visited the rain-affected Yanai Kavuni area today. He inspected areas in North Chennai, including Waldox Road, Yanai Kavuni, Moolakotthalam, and Basin Bridge, to assess the situation and ongoing work.
CM Stalin reviewed the status of rainwater drainage and the precautionary measures taken by the Chennai Corporation, particularly regarding Northeast Monsoon preparations and canal repair efforts.
Municipal Administration Minister KN Nehru and Chennai In-Charge Minister Shekhar Babu accompanied the Chief Minister during this inspection.
After heavy rain last night, showers resumed in Chennai this morning, affecting areas like Egmore, Sindathirippet, Chepauk, Triplicane, Purasawalkam, and Nungambakkam.
The Chennai Municipal Corporation has reported no significant waterlogging in tunnels, except for the Perambur tunnel.
Additionally, eight trees were uprooted during last night's rain, all of which were promptly removed.
Chennai's Ennore area recorded a maximum rainfall of 6 cm, while Meenambakkam registered 5 cm, and the Anna University area saw 4 cm of rainfall.
The heavy rain has caused water accumulation in main roads, residential areas, and low-lying regions across Chennai.
Corporation employees are actively engaged in draining the water.
Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin inspected the State Emergency Control Center at Ezhilagam, Chennai. Speaking to reporters afterward, he provided updates on the situation: “In Chennai, 89 boats and 130 boats in other districts have been deployed for rescue operations.
A total of 300 relief centres are ready in Chennai, and 631 centres have been prepared in surrounding districts, bringing the total to 931 centres."
He further explained, "Fifteen IAS officers in Chennai and senior IAS officers in all districts have been appointed as nodal officers to monitor the flood situation.
In collaboration with the Medical Department and the Corporation, Tamil Nadu has opened 1,000 monsoon special medical camps, with 100 camps set up in Chennai alone."
A total of 13,000 volunteers have been deployed for relief and rescue operations in Chennai, and 65,000 volunteers are on standby across Tamil Nadu.
These volunteers can be brought to Chennai if needed. Udhayanidhi Stalin also mentioned that eight trees have fallen in the city, and efforts are underway to remove them.
He reiterated the advice for IT employees to work from home, as heavy rain is expected over the next two days.
The Chief Minister will make a decision regarding school holidays, with an announcement expected by this evening. If the rain subsides, waterlogging in the Ganesapuram and Perambur tunnels will be cleared.
