The month of October is observed as ‘Breast Cancer Awareness Month’, globally. City-based SLV Hospital is conducting a breast cancer awareness drive throughout October.
Briefing the media about the awareness campaign, Dr. Suresh Venkatachalam, Director of the hospital said that October has been earmarked as breast cancer awareness month internationally, since 1989 and that hospital regularly conducts ‘Cancer Rose Day’ in the month of September, and observes October as the ‘Pink Month’.
Dr. Venkatachalam mentioned that early diagnosis plays a vital role in beating breast cancer. He stated that if the breast cancer size is 1cm or less, cure is likely. He further added that early detection is done by 3 methods , after 50 years i.e., (a) breast self-examination monthly, (b) physician examination yearly and (c) early mammogram.
Dr. Venkatachalam recommended that individuals with a family history of breast cancer begin mammogram screenings at 40.
Dr. Venkatachalam pointed out that a common mistake people make today is relying on information they read on the internet, which can sometimes result in delays in the detection and treatment of breast cancer. He emphasized the importance of consulting healthcare professionals for accurate guidance and timely care.
Dr. Venkatachalam said that throughout the month of October, the hospital will provide free consultation. Diagnostic tests will be done at a concessional price during the month.
Dr. Venkatachalam further mentioned that SLV Hospital has adopted the latest Onco-Plastic Surgery with excellent results and it helps avoid breast removal for breast cancer.
According to him Chemo-port implantation for breast cancer therapy is another speciality of the hospital.
